TDF-101: Theatre Appreciation
This introductory course emphasizes the multiple, complex, and dialectic relationships between live performance and society by surveying dramatic literature as text and in performance from classic and contemporary canons, musical theatre, theatre for young audiences, ethnographic theatre, theatre for social change, and theatre traditions of traditionally underrepresented populations. Students also explore practical coursework in acting, directing, and design.
THEA-1013: Understanding Theatre
This large-lecture introductory course for non-theatre-majors surveys dramatic principles and structure, the functions and contributions of theatre artists to society, modern and historic dramatic literature, and practices of the contemporary stage.
THEA-1713: Introduction to Playscript Analysis
This course introduces theatre majors and minors to the principles of script analysis from a variety of theoretical and practical perspectives, ranging from traditional Aristotelian analysis to critical theoretical approaches. Students apply analytical tools to scripts from major genres and styles from multiple cultures.
THE-220: Principles of Dramatic Analysis (Graduate Assistant, Dr. Rachel Bowditch)
This lecture and discussion based course introduces historical and contemporary performance theory and criticism by identifying, applying, and contextualizing principles and approaches to dramatic analysis. Students begin to develop, expand, and defend personal aesthetic and ethical philosophies of theatre and film.
TH-222: Ensemble Acting & Performance (Graduate Assistant, Prof. Kathleen Donohue)
This advanced studio course for Acting majors employs ensemble techniques that explore theatres collaborative nature to devise and perform a scripted ensemble performance inspired by plays from the Ancient Greek canon.
THP-311: Improvisation with Youth (Introduction to Drama Education)
This studio course introduces principles of educational drama in theory and practice, with particular emphasis on storytelling, story drama, and process drama. Students design and facilitate multiple sessions for primary and secondary students, including a practicum with K-12 students.
THP-312: Puppetry with Children
This studio course explores puppetry across the curriculum, emphasizing the utility of the arts in math, English, science, and social studies classrooms. Students design, build, and manipulate puppets, and create original educational performances and/or lessons, including a practicum with primary school students.
THEA-3230: Survey of Western Theatre
This seminar-style, writing intensive course for upper-class theatre majors surveys both the traditional narrative of Western theatre history from its origins through the early twentieth century as well as the constructed nature of this narrative and possible alternative narratives. Students conduct historical and dramaturgical research, contextualize plays in their original historical epochs, and identify relevant social, political, religious, and economic factors that affected live performance.
THEA-3300/-4300: Clinical Experience in Teaching I & II
This clinical apprenticeship consists of teaching theatre in local schools. Coursework includes observation, tutorial work, small group and whole class instruction, and lesson/unit planning.
THEA-4030/-6030: Storytelling
This studio course reviews the background and techniques of storytelling, with a particular emphasis on the use of the art form in educational contexts. At the graduate level, students conduct microteaching sessions and conduct original research on related topics.
TDF-460: Dramaturgy & Criticism Tutorial
This seminar-style tutorial explores the history, theory, and practice of dramaturgy and dramatic criticism, emphasizing dramaturgical practice. Students conduct production research and disseminate findings in production meetings, rehearsals, and via program notes. Students also critique professional productions in the styles appropriate for both popular publications and scholarly journals. Writing intensive.
THEA-5270/-6270: Performance Theory & Criticism
This graduate-level seminar explores a wide range of theoretical concepts from theatre and performance studies, with a particular emphasis on contemporary trends in critical theory. Students synthesize and critique ideas, and apply theory to a variety of performance traditions.
THEA-5320: Theatre for Young Audiences
This mixed graduate/undergraduate course considers the history, theory and practice of theatre with and for children and adolescents. Students review extensive literature for youth, explore contemporary practices in both professional and educational contexts, and conduct practical projects in the field.
THEA-5390: Student Teaching Seminar
This capstone course accompanies the student-teaching experience for students earning K-12 teacher certification. Weekly seminar discussion of contemporary issues in education accompanies on-site supervision and mentorship.
THP-512: Puppetry Workshop
This graduate-level course explores puppetry across the curriculum. Students research the intersections of puppetry and education historically and/or in contemporary practice, and complete practical projects corresponding to those described in THP-312.
THP-594: Conference & Workshop in Child Drama
This individual study provides mentorship to graduate students preparing to teach courses in theatre and drama education.
